Greenwashing Litigation Tracker

The number of climate change-related litigation cases has been rising in recent years - more than doubling since 2015. According to the Grantham Research Institute, between 1986 and 2014, just over 800 cases were filed. Since 2014, over 2000 cases have been filed - roughly a quarter of these were filed between 2020 and 2022.

These cases inform the larger ESG and climate ecosystem, and are leading to stricter regulations around the world. This litigation functions as both a delay and an advancement on climate action, and can be used as a helpful instrument to enforcement standards and public commitments. Actual has compiled a list of current and past greenwashing litigation in order to provide a resource for the broader climate and sustainability community.
